In this article, we will discuss the 6 things to do before buying the Border Line™ Fencing System. It will help you remove any challenges you might face and get the complete worth of your time, money and effort.

  1.  Plan your fencing layout
  2. Determine the fencing materials
  3. Check the lead times
  4. Choose the fence posts
  5. Decide on the installer
  6. Pick the best place to buy Border Line™

6-step checklist before ordering Horse Sighter Wire

Step #1: Plan your fencing layout

The first step in planning your fence is to map the layout and figure out the area to be covered and where you want your fencing line to be.

  • Create a rough sketch for your reference.
  • Work out a rough meterage of each paddock, so you know how much Border Line™ you need to order.

Step #2:  Determine the fencing materials needed

Work out the quantities, how many of each element are needed:

  1. Number of Strands or runs or wires
  2. Gateways
  3. Corner assemblies
  4. End assemblies
  5. Fence Posts (commonly known as intermediate or line posts)

Once you have these elements in place, you will be able to calculate how many rolls, anchors and joiners of the Border Line™ Fencing System are needed. You will also have an estimate of posts, corner and end assemblies required for your fencing project.

Typically, if you are using only Border Line™ for fencing, 4 to 5 strands of this Horse Sighter Wire are needed for utmost safety and visibility. We would recommend a 4 to 6-metre post spacing depending on how big the paddocks are, the nature of the horses and the contour of the property.

For example, if you have a straight fence of 120 metres and you choose 5 runs of Border Line, this is what you would approximately need:

  • One 600-metre roll of Border Line™.
  • 10 anchors.
  • A tensioning tool during installation to pull tight.
  • End and corner assemblies to bear this tension.
  • 20 to 30 posts depending on the post spacing.

Step #3: Check the lead times early on

It’s best to check the availability of the Border Line™ in the initial stage of your fence planning. Mostly it’s well stocked, however, it’s ideal to ask and confirm for any upcoming price rise or availability issues and plan your purchase accordingly.

Step #4: Choose your fence posts

While the corner and end assemblies have to be either Timber or Steel, for Line posts you also have an option of Timber, Plastic or Woodshield posts.

For line posts, we recommend Hogan posts, where the initial investment is a bit higher, however, it lasts long and is easy to maintain. Thus, it complements the life of Border Line well.

Another option would be Treated Pine Posts, which are comparatively cheaper but typically won’t last as long as your Sighter Wire.

In our opinion Steel posts aren’t a wise investment as far as Border Line is concerned. This sighter wire is functional and ensures a cost-effective and safe way of fencing for your horses. High-end steel posts are costlier than other options and are better suited for horse properties that aspire for great aesthetics and post and rail appearance.

Sometimes Sighter Wires are also installed using star pickets, however, it’s not a good option if you are looking to build safe fencing for your horse property. Solid posts like Hogan or Treated Pine are better suited for safety.

Step #5: Decide who will install the Horse Sighter Wire

While planning the purchase of Border Line, take a look at the resources available – like installation video and decide if you want to install it as a DIY project or hire a Fencing Contractor.

DIY

If you already have your old posts in place and want to replace wire fencing with this safe sighter wire, then installing the fencing yourself is a good idea. It should be easy, provided you have some experience in the past.
